Non-2020 published books on this list will have their first date of publication included.ĭo note that although there’s a rank to this list, I HIGHLY recommend every book/series listed below because I loved all of them immensely, and they received a rating of 4.5 or 5 out of 5 stars from me. The books listed here are not all exclusively published this year the list consists of the top books I read for the first time within this year. These rules allow me to highlight more authors, and at the same time, I’ll also be able to include both new and older books (many of them still need attention) that I read within this year. There will be three rules I set in this list in order for me to give appreciation to more authors rather than having only a few authors hoarding this list. ![]() ![]() Both areas housed a variety of artists: painters, writers, and musicians were commonly seen around both quarters. While jazz was popular in many parts of Paris, Montmartre and Montparnasse were the artistic centers where the style came alive. The locals received jazz musicians positively, and they had a much easier time finding jobs in Paris. As other early recordings made their way into Paris, the genre became more and more popular (Holmes 1). He initially popularized jazz in France, and swept through the country becoming one of the first famous American jazz musicians in Paris. ![]() In 1919, the Southern Syncopated Orchestra began its European tour with Bechet as a key member of its ensemble (Henderson 1). The “swing” beat and solo breaks of the style kept it popular for many years. The style formed during this time was later seen as the traditional style that many musicians practiced. Jazz originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1900. Jazz still lives on in Paris and around the world today. It continued to flourish in both the old and new forms. However, the genre did not die with Bechet in 1959. Jazz became popular in Paris during 1920s, and it reached its height with Sidney Bechet in the late 1940s and 1950s. Especially in Paris, jazz was highly appreciated and musicians typically had an easier time finding jobs. ![]() Even though jazz originated in the United States, it had a significant impact on Europe. ![]()

Abyssinian Chronicles by Moses Isegawa5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() And lots of striking incidents and some strong (though not generally very likeable) characters.ĭespite which, after reading a hundred pages, I checked to see how long the book was and had a sinking feeling when I saw there were still 400 pages to go. The central character is initially brought up in a village before moving to Kampala, is from a Catholic background and is educated in a rather brutal seminary his grandmother is a midwife he ends up leaving Uganda to move to Holland. The good stuff first: it’s a story that traces a couple of generations through the history of modern Uganda, with the arrival of Idi Amin and the collapse of his regime, the sequence of messy guerilla wars, the rise of AIDS and so on. Which is a bit of a relief, because I found it quite hard work. ![]() I’ve just finished Abyssinian Chronicles. ![]()

Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() As the search for Ashmole 782 deepens and Diana seeks out a witch to tutor her in magic, the net of Matthew’s past tightens around them, and they embark on a very different-and vastly more dangerous-journey. Picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night takes Diana and Matthew on a trip through time to Elizabethan London, where they are plunged into a world of spies, magic, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the School of Night. A Discovery of Witches introduces reluctant witch Diana Bishop, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and the battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. ![]() Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Rice-only a few writers capture the imagination the way that Deborah Harkness has with her New York Times–bestselling All Souls trilogy. The kitten fairy5/28/2023 ![]() When the sun arose, and Hans woke up, he was lying in a deep cavern. ![]() And they thought they had done a very clever thing, but it was certain to turn out ill for them. The two sharp ones waited until Hans had fallen asleep, then they got up, and went away leaving him where he was. Then all three went out together, and when they came to the village, the two said to stupid Hans, "Thou mayst just as well stay here, as long as thou livest thou wilt never get a horse." Hans, however, went with them, and when it was night they came to a cave in which they lay down to sleep. ![]() As they had been with him several years, he one day said to them, "I am old, and want to sit in the chimney-corner, go out, and whichsoever of you brings me the best horse home, to him will I give the mill, and in return for it he shall take care of me till my death." The third of the boys was, however, the drudge, who was looked on as foolish by the others they begrudged the mill to him, and afterwards he would not have it. ![]() In a certain mill lived an old miller who had neither wife nor child, and three apprentices served under him. ![]()

You know me well by nina lacour5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() This is an ownvoices book and you can tell. I really liked the focus on the formative years of identity, and how being in that stage of your life where you're trying to find yourself is complicated so much by also trying to understand your queer identity. I related to them both a lot, but also felt quite Seen because it's really rare to have queer friends in books. I always say queer people travel in packs and the friendship between the two really resonated with me. The friendship between Mark and Kate was my favourite thing about this. Kate is in love with a girl she barely knows, and Mark is in love wish his best best friend Ryan who may or may not know. They run into eachother in the city one night and realise, over one wild night, that they do have some things on common. ![]() You Know Me Well follows Kate and Mark, who sit next to eachother in class and never talk. I read it pretty much in one sitting and enjoyed all of it so much. ![]() I loved the friendship between Mark and Kate, a lesbian and gay character and just how this whole book played out. To be honest, this was the exact kind of queer book I needed and I didn't even realise that until I read it. ![]() This book had the most iconic mlm/wlw solidarity and I am HERE FOR IT. I'm ready to find myself, but I'm not ready for you to know what I find” “I'm ready to love myself, but I'm not ready to lose you. ![]()
